Centering tiny Bicycle Rims – A guide also for Brompton wooden rims – by Edgar Jakobs

Centering tiny Bicycle Rims – by Edgar Jakobs, Germany – Ghisallo WheelMaster

(original article version available also in German language at: http://edgarjakobs.blogspot.de/p/tipps-tricks.html)

To center a rim in a Bicycle Wheel a Dishing Tool is needed. Here you can see how it works:

Some Dishing Tools are too large for 16″ or 20″ rims. And not everybody owns a Park Tool TS2 Truing Stand, which is able to control the center of the rim.

The center of the rim in a wheel can also be controlled with a cord.

In this example I led the cord on the left side of the rim over the Hub and I fixed it with Tape on the right side.
And I made sure that the cord was not bended by the spokes.

We can calculate the correct value this way:

(width of the Hub – width of the rim) / 2

By Numbers: (130mm – 28mm) / 2 = 51mm

Thanks!
